My Mum lived down by the docks in Dingle. With her Dad away in the Amy Her Mum was left with three young children and a baby on the way. During the bombing raids Grandma Aice and the girls came out of the shelter to find their home destroyed as so people did. They had their second home destryoed by the bombing also. During this time Grandma Alice had the baby and Grandad lloyd swapped passes with another soldier and set off home, on his way home he was killed in a bombing raid in Liverpool. After Grandma Alice, now a widow and the girls had their third house bombed out they were evacuated to Lancashire. Eventually Grandma Alice remarried. My Mums stepfather renamed her Alice and her name and dad were not to be spoken of again. Although my Mum was only about 4 years old she can still remember the Bombing. She only has one memory of her Dad, he was stood on the stairs in one of their houses, she said he was smiling and was quite small. I think it is so sad that she not only missed out having a life with her Dad but also the many family memebers that she must have got to know during her four years in Dingle. She does not even know where he is buried. I have tried to find out, but I can't find him. How different her life would have been but for the war. It is not one of those great hero stories but I have alway felt a great sadness about it.
