Hughie and George were both radar operators in the 85th Heavy AA Regiment. They were standing patiently among the sandunes at Dunkirk. Suddenly a Stuka bomber dropped a stray shell close to them. Both men ducked and lay flat on the sand. However Hughie was just a little too slow and the blast blew off all of his uniform except for his blue gym shorts which were worn in place of underpants.

When they were finally ferried to Dover the WVS ladies were unable to find clothes big enough to fit Hughie as he was over six feet tall and very broad. The vicar of Dover who was assisting the WVS ladies was also of similar build. He kindly gave Hughie his shirt which had a clerical collar attached to it.

Hughie journeyed home to Middlesborough dressed only in a clerical shirt, blue shorts and boots.
