My eldest brother was a POW for 5 years.
When he came home my parents had moved from Penkhull to Fenton.
We were registered to shop at Nellie triggers shop. I went to fetch groceries including eggs( just one per week)
One day as I walked down Penkhull bank to Wharf Street I saw two soldiers standing on the corner. One of them recognised me by my long hair and shouted Margaret ! I dropped all the eggs and goceries - it was the first time I had seen my brother in six years.
We went home and knocked on the front door - mother opened the door and nearly fainted. I was five when he went and ten when he came home.
The Theatre Royal put on a pantomine for children and families of POW's - we had a present and I went several times.
I remember the school air-raid shelter where we had to sit on wooden forms.
Once when we at Cross Street school a bus arrived with refugee chldren - the driver asked mums to take the children, some were from London and some from coventry.
An incendiary bomb came throught he window but it didn,t go off - father took it to the police.
I remember several neighbours had telegrams and they put out black flags.
