My father stayed in London. We had many billlets in Bedford but the one I remember most was with many other people living in the Howard Church Hall in Mill Street. This building is now the Mission nightclub. We had our food in Cauldwell street in a canteen, whilst in there I developed whooping cough and was sent to a sick bay in Clapham Rd. When I came out my mother had been given a lodging with an old chap named George in Pilgcroft Street. The bombing still carried on in Bedford. I started school at Amptill Road school, my dear friend Jean Glassser also a Londoner became my best friend and still is after 60 years, we had many adventures one we both remember is sitting in the front room in the dark, each with a book or piece of wood waiting for the mice to come out and try to hit them and catch them! (no television then!) Our clothes came from the red cross : wellingtonsand slippers and old gym slips we looked like little orphan Annie. After the war we worked in Woolworths 1/2 day Saturday, when I left school I went to work at the RAF camp at Cardington in the tailor shop. I met my husband and had one child a boy. My marriage broke up, but I now have a new person in my life. My brothers and my brothers still meet up. I also have a younger brother who I helped to look after when my mum went to work, but along the line after being alone my father who was living in London found another wife?! ( still married to my mother!). I now have another 7 brothers and sisters, I only met up with them when my brother got married for the second time a big surprise all round for them and me, we all get on well.
