I lived in Ipswich and went off to France in 1944 as part of the invasion
force. I was in the Royal Engineers my brother Raymond was in an Armoured
Guards Division. He died in Holland.
My unit went to Holland later to invade a group of islands. After a while I
asked permission to borrow a vehicle and go off to find my brother's grave.
I wanted a picture for my mother. I found the grave but the sun wasn't right
for me to get the picture right. I wanted the name on the cross to show up.
There were some local children who had been looking after the graves. They
were hungry and I handed out bread and jam to them. When I had the picture
developed they were all on it so I had a great picture after all.
Later on, in Holland I met a Dutch girl, Martina, and we got on well. After
the War I sent for her and we married at All Hallows Church. The church had
been bombed during the War and the organ had been wrecked - we only had a
piano but we didn't care. Martina and I still live in Bramford.
