Mary worked as a Red Cross Nurse at Clatterbridge Hospital on the Wirral during the war. Initially she lived in a nurse鈥檚 home, where their meals were cooked for them, and then in Spital in digs. She remembers wearing a blue uniform with white apron with a red cross on it. She remembers the war as a difficult, but very friendly time with dances being frequently arranged at the hospital. At Christmas the rationing made it difficult to buy Christmas presents so presents were limited to more essential items such as soap, hankies and socks. One of the things that Mary found most difficult was the black outs especially when she had to cycle home in the dark. Despite all the difficulties the war brought with it Mary seems to felt like it was a special time and valued the friendships she made working at the hospital.
