I was 18 when the war started. When we lost our home during the blitz my father was also killed. His body couldn鈥檛 be recovered for 2 weeks, as there was a land mine in a house opposite. Eventually we managed to make a new home. My brother was taken prisoner of war in Italy, where he survived as he escaped. I was called myself when I was 20 to do nursing, which i really enjoyed. Also when I was 20 I met my future husband, then he was sent abroad to India to serve in the army and was there for 3 and a half years. When he came home we were married. We were married for nearly 50 years, as he died 8 weeks before our golden wedding anniversary.
We hadn鈥檛 used the air raid shelters, when the blitz began. We used our basement. When my father died it was the first time in a week he stayed in the house as he was at work at the rest of the week. We had just left the house as the bomb hit it.
My brother was taken prisoner of war in North Africa and then transferred with to Italy. He was there for at least 3 years.
