I was at school in Falmouth during the war and well remember cycling there and back daily. I passed a house in the town where American soldiers were billeted and they would throw packets of their lifesavers sweets- a forerunner to out polo mints but the lifesavers were fruit flavoured - into my bicycle basket. I found it hard to understand why they had sweets to give to strangers whilst we were living under such severe rationing.
