During an air raid, an unexploded bomb was dropped nearby. Our house was on the safe perimeter,so we were not evacuated like the people who lived further down the street. Our Mother a very kindly person sent drinks out to the bomb disposal team, who were about ten men.
Then she invited them to come for some lunch,as it happend we had our meat ration for the week,a joint of beef. The ration for three adults and two children.
We did live in a greengrocers shop, our grandmother lived with us.so there were plenty of vegetables available. My mother cooked plenty of those, and the soldiers came in two at a time to have some lunch.
The meat went on and on and on,it provided meals for all the soldiers and all our family, as my sister was off school ill.
Our family have always considered this meal was a miricle, like the loaves and fishes.
We have always had in our draw the same kind of carving knife our mother used.It was a Granton knife made by Wm.Grant Sheffield.
