This story is about Jack Whiteheads life during the Second World War written by Mohammed Teni and Imran Mulla.
Jack Whitehead was born in 1921 in Nelson (Lancashire, England). In 1935, when he left school, Jack decided to go to Whalley (Lancashire, England) to find work and found work on a farm. He was eighteen years old when the war started. When he was nineteen he decided to register with the army. Jack did not get called up to the army as the British Army was happy with him working on the farm which enabled him to help civilians at home. This was because there were limited amounts of food and with Jack working on a farm, more food could be produced.
During the Second World War, many things were rationed e.g. clothes, eggs, sugar etc. Although Jack worked on a farm, life was difficult because the food he produced was traded on the Black Market for other goods he needed such as petrol. Food was made cheap around this time; milk was two pence and beer was four pence. The latest model of cars made by Ford could also be bought for one hundred pounds.
Jack can remember that there were blackouts. This involved all windows being covered at night so no light could be shown. This prevented the Germans from knowing where they were. He can remember German bombers bombing Liverpool on Friday nights during the Second World War. On Jacks farm there were no bomb shelters as the Germans did not tend to bomb farms. This was because large quantities of people did not live there.
Jack is now 84 years old and lives very happily with his wife in Whalley. This story makes me feel quite sad because of all the hardships he went through and I feel very honoured to have met Jack Whitehead face to face and to have had a chance to interview him.
