This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 war site by Connor from St. Nicholas C of E Primary School in New Romney, Kent and has been added to the website on behalf of Mr Leslie Day with his permission and they fully understand the sites term鈥檚 and conditions.
Mr Leslie Day was 7 years of age on the day war broke out. He lived in Dover and there was only one radio set in the street. All the people in the street gathered outside the open window to hear the broadcast of Neville Chamberlain announcing the war had been declared. The local pub opened unusually at 11 o鈥檆lock on a Sunday and all the men vanished to discuss this news.
