"I'm a pupil from Heaton ManorComprehensive School, Newcastle upon Tyne, entering Jessie (Sheila) Cumming's story onto the website, and they fully understand the website terms and conditions of use"
The school was closed during the war, children were evacuated, I never went back to school. My 2 sisters were crying of terror and were frightened of the bombs . There were 2 blitzes in Glasgow, no shelters were in Glasgow and it was so cold, lucky there were no bombs near my house. Every one was together, and they helped each other. We blocked the walls. There was a blackout. Everything was rationed, I got enough and my diet was healthy. But there was no bananas or sweets. My worst memory was when there was a blitz for 2 nights it was scary. Worked in an office for Scottish women troops. A few of my friends got evacuated. I didn鈥檛 want to be evacuated. I had a nice family, I was scared of aeroplanes because they were quite frightening. It was good when the war was finishing but there was still a war in Japan. After the war finished it was still the same rationing, I saw pictures of dead people. During the war people had gas masks. I went to the nearest school for gas masks. Germans tried to bomb ships. Gas masks were smaller. I met some nice people. I was 20 when the war finished. We sat together, they thought some one shouted gas and every one struggled to put on the gas masks. A few bombs were dropped on Glasgow. It was terrible. 3 people got bombed, one died of shock and the other 2 got bombed. Winston Churchill was encouraging. The health care wasn鈥檛 as good, it isn鈥檛 as good as it is now. It was hard to get food into Britain. We had 1 egg a week. Lots of people were evacuated to Canada but got bombed on the way. In the cinema we saw Hitler on screen, it was scary, it was Hitler鈥檚 fault, and it was genocide.
