I was 18 when the war started. I was asked to join the ARP first aid section at the start of the war. I was then called up for the ATS and trained at Droitwitch learning drills and military law. I was then posted to Newtown in Wales. We used to have horrid meals there! I did clerical work as a clerk with special duties. I was then sent to Chilwell in Nottingham where my job was to arrange leave for the officers and to send them abroad to their postings, on the Majors orders. We did enjoy ourselves and went out a lot. Towards DDay we would be given a sandwitch and then had to go to the Ordinance Depot to pack stores. There were 24 double bunks in 1 room at the barrackes there.
