My two Aunts Ede and Lil worked in a factory doing something nevertalked about. gran stayed at home and cooked what ever rations were available and I as a child of six or seven at the time did not go toschool at school because we were being taught in our own street in various 'front rooms' six children at a time. The front rooms of the street where I lived were only use on special ccasions like Christmas and weddings and funerals, and children were never allowed in them alone. However the war brought many changes besides front rooms being used by schools. And oneof the changes was huge. Foreign soldiers on our side were in town. Ede and Lil. both young single and pretty wentdancing twice a week and more often than not brought home these huge men wearing strangeuniforms, talking loudly and waving there hands aboutto make themselves understood. Whatever time they came in, usually with the aunts gigggling Gran would get out of bed and make potsof tea, Sometimes the men brought bottles of beer into the house and it would get noisier. One man a polish pilot came several times and he played an instrument lIke a banjo and sang sad songs in a language The Aunts always cried even though they couldn't understand them.
