My dad was in the Army too old for active service (1st W. War infantry (Kings) evacuated us to Leicester where he was stationed after returning on leave during Liverpool’s May blitz we had an Anderson Shelter in our garden ( I’ve still got bits in my Bebington garden ) grew strawberries over it.

In L’pool the children all collected shrapnel after air raids. We all knew the different sounds of Allied aircraft & German. There was a dog in our road called Spitfire. My mum went to work in the Chilprufe factory office in wartime . There were special celebratory weeks — Salute the Soldier was one. We went to see our Dad in the march past.

We missed sweets - we used to chew liquorice root (disgusting) and have sherbet dabs. Our Sunday school teacher had a boyfriend in the American Air Force and he used to meet her on Sunday mornings with his pockets bulging with sweets for ‘the kids’. My little brother used to hang round the American camp and was twice brought home on the back of a jeep.
