In the early 1940s my dad, who was in the 'Ox and Bucks' was stationed in France. They were near a farm and my dad thought that it would be a good idea if they could get some fresh eggs. He sent one of his men, who spoke no French to ask for 'les oeufs'. Off he went and found the farmer's wife. He kept repeating 'les oeufs' but she couldn't understand him. Eventually he crouched down and flapped his arms like wings. She showed him the toilet!
