My father was born in Halewood, Liverpool, he was in the Royal Navy on the Russian runs. The crew were given a little light to wear on their tunics, so that if they fell over board, everyone could see them and they鈥檇 be able to get them out. The only problem was that the water was that cold, if they fell in the shock would kill them. If that didn鈥檛 get them the hypothermia would. When he came back he worked in a bank and then British Leyland.
