In 1939 war started, I was working at Vauxhall Motors in Luton, Bedfordshire on night work. I am a Londoner, and went to Luton by train. It was 30 miles each way from St.Pancras station each day. When London was being bombed each night, we were allowed to go on the roof during our lunch break and from these we could see London on fire. When we came home each day we wondered what we would see at our homes. In our garden we had a air raid shelter. When the siren went, our family would go in their, until the all clear sounded. We were lucky in Holloway, North London, and came through ok.
