Although we seemed to be miles from anywhere in particular there was always a lot going on in our small village of Low Habberley on the outskirts of Kidderminster in Worcestershire. There seemed to be continuous army convoys on the back road through Franche to Bewdley. I don鈥檛 know where they were all going but it was sometimes so constant that I couldn鈥檛 get across the road with my bike so I was late for work.
We also had soldiers billeted in a very large Victorian House on the edge of our village called the Woodlands. The soldiers there manned a Searchlight Station that was based in the Park Attwood Hotel at Trimpley another large old house.
We used to watch the soldiers doing their drill in the road. Sometimes they talked to us. There was nothing for them to do locally and I think they were bored and lonely and we reminded them of their own children.
