The effects of the war did not immediately end with peace in 1945. I can remember standing by a very high maghogany counter in an office next to where Nat West bank is today in Station Road to change the families ration books well after the war had ended. Going shopping as a child with my dad at the corner shop I saw the ration book handed over and the grocer or his assistant cut out the coupons. Sometime the grocer would bring out a tin of pineapple jam from under the counter and ask dad if he would like some. He reserved items which were not in regular supply for his usual customers while the more available items were stocked in view on the shelves.
