Whilst serving in the war in the 65th Search Light Regiment in Norfolk, I had a call out for an emergency. My attention was drawn to a German plane - (we found out later it had been to Liverpool) approximately 8,000 feet up. I had to shout 'Target' as loud as I could. I was hawking my attention all the time, whilst the plane was twisting and turning, but I managed to keep it in focus, and lit the plane up.
Everything around was pitch black. I had to shout 'Douse' to turn the light off and 'Expose' to turn the light on. I was No. 4 in the unit. The plane eventually crashed. I was visited by some higher up officials who congratulated me on my action. Recommendations were given for my service.
During this time, the only thing that I could think of was my responsibility to help to save lives. When I look back I feel very proud of my actions.
