My grandparents, especially my grandfather, used to enjoy telling this story to me when I was a child. One night they were walking home from a public house in the town during the war. They could not see very well because of the blackout. Suddenly my grandmother slipped on something and fell down. My grandfather knelt down to help her up and found that she had slipped on some onions. With that my grandmother forgot about her grazed knees as they both felt around to find more onions. My grandfather always said that the soup made from them tasted wonderful in those days of shortages.
