the shipping company I worked for evacuated us to Littlehampton when the war started in 1939. In 1940 when thousands of our troops had to be evacuated from Dunkirk we were so sorry for them that we used to go tothe top of the cliffs and to Swanborne Park with flasks of tea ; they were so exhausted that they just fell asleep and it was the oinly time that we actually nursed them; in fact they would just try to stay awake they were so glad to be alive but they justs put their tired heads on our laps and fell almost into a coma. THERE WERE MASSES OF TINY BOATS. and many poor young souls struggling out of the sea and clambering up the banks where the grass was soft and miraculously the weather was absolutely perfect , even the sea was like a millpond
