This contribution is taken from the archives of the McLean Museum, Greenock part of Inverclyde Council

‘There was an Edinburgh policeman there. We asked him if this public house was open at the end of Ingleston St and Crescent Street. And he said ‘Oh aye,’ he said ‘the pub’s open’. So I detailed two lads to go and they were only to have a glass of beer and come right back. And they came back and were looking for this bobby — they would have killed him I believe, because the pub was blown wide open. There was neither spirits, beer nor a gantry nor anything to be seen — it had been bombed out of existence — but it was quite funny you know — the pub was open, oh aye it was open — wide open!’ anonymous
