As a child I attended High Street School in Tunstall. I remember convoys of troops, especially Americans, coming through town. We'd hear the rumble of the vehicles approaching. The teacher would stand at the window and watch them go by but as children we weren't allowed to look. Shame really, I bet it would have been quite spectacular to see.
