My school was evacuated to Yewhurst, where I stayed in the manor house with the lady of the manor. I remember I was expected to have a cigarette after dinner with her. At first I refused, but then though 鈥淲hy not鈥.
I joined the ATS in 1943 and worked with the VDS. I was initially in Ashford, Middlesex, and later in Feltham.
After this I was posted to Italy. I was in charge of education for the ATS, and had to arrange classes to teach people about civilian life, and to prepare them for their demob. I worked my way up Italy, visiting places like Florence.
I took advantage of being in another country by learning Italian. I still speak it to this day; in fact, when I retired at 65, I started my own translation agency.
