I was born in 1935, so only 4 when war started. I lived at Dormanstown, Redcar in a house built by Dorman Long for their steelworkers. MY mother dora and my brother Eugene went to live in Middleton in teesdale as my aunty had a large public house there. My father who worked at Dorman Long could only visit occaionally when his shifts gave him the weekend off. My father Eugene had lost his leg in the first world war at the Battle of Mons so he had a job in the steel works in a job created for disabled men.We came home aover a year later, and I remember going to the airaid shelter when the siren went. A few bombs were dropped on the steel works, and I remember seeing an airaplane shot down which landed in Dormanstown (in the Fleet)and how sad everyone was when we realised it was a British plane
