This story was told to me by 74 year old Gerald Bradley from Portstewart who resided in Castledawson during the war;
The local population in Castledawson was being depleted of young men throughout the war years as they went off to join the services.
This changed with the arrival of the American 82nd Airborne Regiment who occupied Moyola Park Estate.
The local girls were bowled over by the handsome GI's who wore smart uniforms and had plenty of money.
I believe there may have been around 6 'GI brides' from the village.
If a local girl walked out with a young GI down a county road,quite often you would see her mother and father, arm and arm, several paces and a few minutes behind them!
