I was in the QA's(Queen Alexandars Nurses). We were the first hostpital going for North Africa. On our travels there were storms for days. But there was a torpedo coming and the captain swerved to miss it but didn't so unfortunately 2 units of nurses were lost.
When we got there it was very hard work. If a convoy was brought in the night we had to get up to see to it. We had a horrible chef, we could see him wiping his nose when cooking. He only gave us hot chocolate and said there was no tea. But we found out that he was selling it to the Arabs.
The Sargents chef took his place.
I went to a place called 'Quediatch Meaia' near the Sarahara desert. One day me and another nurse went to the market. We saw a camel with a lovely carpet. I wanted to send it to my mum. The British soldiers like to look after us so they bartered with the Arab for it. But the Arab got it wrong and sold them the camel. Then the camel followed us everywhere. In the end the boys took it away to get rid of it.
So another day one of the sisters wanted us to take her to constantine. I said 'I dont have transport' and she said 'well what about that camel'.
