I was 4 years old when I was evacuated to Southport at the onset of the war. We were very lucky because my father's boss lent us his flat on Lord Street. What impressed me most about the flat was that it had a large refrigerator and central heating. Sheer luxury to a child from a working class background and a terraced house.
I never went to school whilst in Southport so to while away the time my mother used to take me down to the beach, where she would sit knitting and talking to another mother, whilst I played with her child, she happened to be Mrs Dewar of the Dewar's whisky family.
