Fresh fruit was always scarce and I remember whenever the greengrocer had a delivery, neighbours would make sure everyone knew so we鈥檇 all hurry to get some. People were like that in those days. We were always looking out for one another, always considerate of others a real community spirit.

I was evacuated for a time, I went to stay in South Wales with a lovely family. The gentleman was a miner, there was a son, a daughter and a dog called Queenie. Funny, isn鈥檛 it, but the dog really stuck in my memory. It was a lovely place and the garden was full of home grown fruit and vegetables. I remember a day trip to Barry Island. Apparently my mum missed me so much that eventually I went back home but once back they couldn鈥檛 understand a word I said due to the strong Welsh accent! Years later I asked mum if I was upset at leaving my family to live in Wales, she replied 鈥淣o, you couldn鈥檛 wait to go, you though it was a day trip out!!鈥�
