Rolls Royce shifts used to pass each other in nightingale Rd and one morning two German planes got through and machine gunned the workers down as they walked along the road. One of the planes was shot down, it was terrible. I was only very young but it was felt by all. There were bombs dropping all around us when I used to sit on the cellar steps with my grandmother. Every street either side of us was bombed.
No one knows the terror of being evacuated when you are very young. No one explained anything to us and we didn鈥檛 have any counselling to help us come to terms with it.
