As a ten year old, living in John Street on a Saturday afternoon, and a cold December, what to do next? A friend had asked me to go to their shelter, his dad was putting a film on show for a couple of mate, I did not go, I don't know why, but stopped at home.
When the bombs dropped the houses across from us took a direct hit, my family were down stairs when it happened, a fin from one of the bombs went through my bedroom window, the upstairs was a shambles! We had to move out, and went to live with my Auntie. I have a few memories of that day, but I remember the families who died. At the time of the bombing there were evacuees living with families in the street, one of the lads who died they found his body a few days later, on the picture house in the next street. He was an evacuee. The lights of the Caroma factory had been shoving through the blackout.
