This account was told by Pamela to her daughter, and is contributed to this website with her permission.
My first job was a secretarial post with an export business called Keeps, based in Great Charles Street, Birmingham.
One day after a particularly bad night's bombing, I got the bus to work as usual. When I reached the city centre at about 8.30 in the morning, there was an eerie sound. There was none of the usual noise of traffic; all I could hear was the tinkling sound of glass being swept up. All the shop windows had been blown out during the night and people everywhere were clearing up the mess. In New St there was a rather nice department store called Marshall and Snellgrove. That was ablaze; firemen were tackling the fire with their hoses and police were directing people out of the way.
I got to the office to find that an incendiary bomb had hit the roof in the night and set the place on fire. The firemen had been and had put out the fire with their hoses. As I arrived, staff were sweeping black water out of the door.
I was sent home for the day.
