During a bad period of air raids, my mother, my sister and myself were sheltering in the basement of a bakery. Incendaries bombs were being dropped all over the district. Whilst sheltering, a fire watcher came down to the basement and told us that the roof was on fire and were unable to cope with the fires and could people come and help put it out.All the other people sheltering were women and children so myself aged 11 and my sister 13 were sent up to the roof. We had problems climbing over the bakery machinery to get to the fire which took 2 or 3 minutes. Eventually we put the fire out with stirrup pump and that is when the fun begun! I can well remember the incident over 60 years ago with bombs dropping and aeroplanes overhead. Once we had put the fire out, we were plunged into darkness and had great difficulty finding our way back to the basement amongst and all the complicated machinery!
