The education system was a hit and miss affair at this time since all the young men had been called up and the schools depended upon untrained teachers. Our classes were large and many of the Heckington school teachers were wives of the soldiers stationed in the village. I had so many awful infant teachers that I hated school. They stayed until their husbands were posted elsewhere then another one appeared. I swear that I would have not learned anything if Mum hadn鈥檛 taught me to read! However I was dragged to school and began to settle down when I promoted to Class 2 and had local people to teach me to behave.
My father was George William Henry Wheatman, licensee and master butcher.
My mother was Mary Wheatman, expert at everything and she became licensee in 1949 after the death of my father.
My brother was George Edward Wheatman, master butcher and soldier.
My sister is Shirley Ann Revill (nee Wheatman)
Mt Granny was Mrs Betsy Ann Beresford of Great Hale.
Myself a mere retired infant teacher for my sins, (after my own bad experiences)Margaret Holmes (nee Wheatman)
