I own a very unusual car, it's a 1939 R/H drive Studebaker, made in Indiana USA and shipped to the UK for the 39' motor show which did not take place. It was bought by a Mr Tubby,a weapons engineer at Vickers. He was called up as a Major and the car was stored at RAF Biggin, what a daft place to leave a car.
Major Tubby retreived has damaged car in 46' and had his 'men' fill the holes with a new stuff called fibre glass and paint the blue car black, the only paint found. The car was seen around Sidcup until 1950, when Mjr Tubby had a stroke, he never left the house. I met him in the 80's and he told me stories of what he and his 'men' did in WW2, one day he asked his wife to give me the key to the garage to see 'the amazing 'Stude', I did, it was a wreck as the garage roof had dropped onto the car and the rain had poured in, But, I said I had seen the amazing car.
He died in 1981 and his wife called to say he allways said I could have the car, so I bought a wreck of a US car. Three years later a rebuilt blue car emerged from my shed, it is very unusual, it's the only complete example of it's year, it had done 10400 miles when left to rot, now after 22 years it's done 34000, not the car to go to the shops in, but weddings, the odd film. This year I took it to RAF Biggin to the Memorial Chapel and parked it in WW2 markings under the Spitfire on its pole, a very nice picture indeed. Visit the Chapel, it's an amazing place, you get a guided tour if you ask.
