This story was submittedto the People`s War site by Linda Nicholson(nee Dixon) on behalf of Reg Dixon and has been added to this site with his permission.
Although we were engaged in fighting a war, there were times when we were allowed to enjoy ourselves.
This story is about when I was stationed in Palestine and I was on a few days leave.
We stayed at the Church of Scotland Hostel in Jerusalem and I was priviliged to visit the many places of Biblical interest which I had been told about at school.
My friend at the time was Jock McGrath and he was also interested in places and sites. In and around the old city of Jerusalem we visited the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Garden of Gethsemene and the Wailing Wall. We walked along the narrow street, Via Dolorosa, which means `The Way of the Cross` to the hill of Calvery, and saw the Mosque of Omah.
Most days we had to arrange our own activities but one day the hostel arranged a trip to the Dead Sea. We travelled through the Wilderness of Judea to get there and it was a very hot day. After refreshments we went to the sea to find out if it was true that you can`t sink. We walked in up to the waist and sat down and hey presto, you don`t need an armchair.
Another day we travelled north and stayed a while in Haifa, before going on to the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus fed the five thousand with five loaves and two fishes. We couldn`t visit that place without having a swim in the sea. Another day when we were in and around Jerusalem we visited the British War Cemetry on the Mount of Olives and the Church of the Assention, which has a footprint on a rock said to be that of Jesus. We decended by donkey, I remember, which cost a few pennies.
So that is my story of a memorable few days leave, which I will always remember (courtesey of H.M.Government)
