I was 11 years old when the war started and spent a lot of time with other children playing round my grandfather鈥檚 farm which bordered the river and included part of the Common Land on the other bank. My grandfather鈥檚 horse and pony grazed there.
Two bombs dropped on the common, killing the pony. The horse was wounded and had a piece of shrapnel lodged in his shoulder. A hollow was made in his collar to stop it chafing and he lived and worked for another six months until the shrapnel paralysed him and led to his death.
We boys went looking for shrapnel and the vet who attended to the horse gave me 2/6 for a piece.
The bomb blasts also slightly damaged some cottages and blew out the windows from the chapel.
