My grandparents had a holiday bungalow in Bracklesham Bay which is very close to Chichester on the South Coast. When war broke out they were on an extended summer holiday and they stayed throughout the war. One day they were told to stay inside close the curtains and not look out. Of course the children did and they saw hundreds of vehicles and men marching towards the coast. We think it was probably a practice for the Normandy Landings.

Message 1 - Practice Makes Perfect

Posted on: 05 August 2003 by Rob Illingworth

I think you are right about this being a practice exercise.
Stan Hook, whom I interviewed as part of our Shepway Libraries People's War program, said he trained for 6 to 9 months prior to landing at Courselles.
If you want to see his account of how that practice became action read the story on the site entitled

Combined Operations

Rob Illingworth
