I was 17 when i volenteered in 1943. I went along to the recruting office with a couple of friends. Within a fortnight, one friend was sent to the R.A.F, and the other to the army. To my disgust and shame I was conscripted into the pits as a bevan boy. I was so dissapointedit made you feel guilty at not "doing your bit". As i was an apprentice engineer, however i was giving the choice of going to the railway's instead so i applied as fireman on the foot plateat colwick. I covered all the trains goods and passengers. there was no set times you just worked until the job was done. It was hard and dirty. You had to "sheet down" so no light was visable from the fires to the planes overhead.
