My father, Ted Garrett, was an Artillery NCO in the BEF. On evacuation at Dunkirk, soldiers had to leave behind everything except the clothes they stood in. But my father refused to get on the boat without his cricket bat. He said he'd stay in France with his cricket bat. Well, you have to keep to your principles. Eventually the cricket bat was forcibly removed from him and thrown in the sea. "Stupid English" the comment from the Dutch.
