Ron Wilson with his lorry

Onwards, ever onwards, by now I had a 3 tonne lorry to drive, having never driven before it was rather daunting. We left Egypt behind and travelled on, through Libya, up to Tobruk and into Tunis, but not for long as the Germans were pushing south towards Tobruk, so we were on the move again, back to where we came from — back to Allemain — and there we stayed, for maybe a month. I had time for some leave in Alexandria and bought a few gifts etc.

Then the Big Battle started on the 23rd October — hundreds of guns started up, and did not stop for 48 hours. By that time Jerry had had enough and started up north to Lybia and Tunis. We followed at a safe distance, getting as far as Tubruk again. At that point, the war in Africa was over.
