I was about 9 when the war started and I was living in Vine Street in Wallsend. There were about five Anderson Shelters in the street which we had to rush down into when the sirens went off.

I remember the searchlights scanning the sky but the best thing I remember about the air raids is that - if the sirens went off after midnight and make the kids go into the shelters it meant that you didn't have to go to school the next day. The air raids were very frightening but as I hated school I was always glad when they went off after midnight.
