Thomas's regiment KSLI (Shropshire Light Infantry) were stationed in Canada during the outbreak of the war. He remembers racing back across the Atlantic in atrocious weather with no lights on,zig zagging to avoid German bombs. He recalls one unexploded bomb landing on the front deck and helping to push it over board.
The good thing about the journey was that he actually had a bed to sleep in instead of the usual hammock.
