My first memory of the war was being lifted out of my cot by my mother in Aberfan, South Wales, and wrapped in a Welsh blanket and taken outside to look at the red sky. My mother said 'look at the sky, it is red because Swansea has been bombed and is burning. You will remember this when you are older I'm showing you history'.
It was absolutely amazing, because Swasnea is approximately 60 miles away.
