round about 1940 i was 6 years old, and ENGLAND was at war,not that i really understood the reasons for the war.But i will never forget one of the big raids on HULL, I lived near the fish docks, my family hardly went into the shelters we came down the stairs and stopped there. BUT one of the big raids on HULL that night changed all that,a bomb hit a house a few doors away we tried to get out of the house but the front door had jammed ,the door was forced open by an air-raid warden. We managed to get to the shelter the docks were on fire, a land mine hit some where near the shelter the wall in the middle cracked some men held it up including my dad and we were told to run to the city temple a church down madley street,i asked where my mother was the warden said she is coming.we ran to the church my dad hurt is shoulder.we lived there for a couple of days.my brother Albert was in the M/NAVY on russian covoys his ship was sunk but he survived when he came home he couldnt believe our house had gone. but he did find us we all came out alive, the church city temple madley street is still there.I live in SHEFFIELD now but i will never forget that night as long as i live Thanks to all the men and women who gave there lifes .I joined the Royal Navy in 1951 was involed in the suez war came out in 1960 and now 71 years old .thanks to all the people who freed us from Hitler
