Exeter in the Blitz
By: June kerslake
7 years old at the time, lived in Exeter
It was a sunny day in Exeter back in the war and our whole family were cooling off out in the garden, suddenly a German plane came over and started to attack the houses around us with machine guns, because the Germans were on their way home they were getting rid of their bullets. My baby brother was at the end of the garden in his pram and we were at the other end of the garden. My mother had to be weary of the bullets as she dodged them to the end of the garden where she got him and brought him back to us. She had to risk her own life..
When the blitz of Exeter took place my dad was in charge of diverting the water to the fire engines and cutting off the houses supply because he was so busy he didn鈥檛 come home for three days. My mum was so worried as she thought he was dead. In the end she had to find him and bring him home.
My friends and me used to go and collect pieces of parachute that was lying around and make it into blouses because we didn鈥檛 have many clothes. I had a really nice one with poppies and carnations sewn on to the front .
