I did not go into the forces, and worked as an engineer all my life for LMS (London Midland Scottish). My wife and I lived near Wolverton, Bucks and I made all kinds of engines for the war effort. It was a 12 hour day and I did some night shifts as needed. I remember going into the shelter quite often and seeing the glow of fires in London. I remember a bomb hitting a target at Towcester. My main impression of my work during the war was how busy I was- sometimes working Saturdays and Sundays. I met my wife Mary just before the war and we were married in 1939. Mary did all kinds of jobs to earn money for our home — washing, ironing cooking, cleaning and scrubbing floors. Her father was a butcher so we did not go too short of food. We always grew our own vegetables and were very happy.
