This contribution to People鈥檚 War was received by the Action Desk at 大象传媒 Radio Norfolk and submitted to the website with the permission and on behalf of Mrs de Lara.
鈥淚 was born and brought up in Nottinghill Gate, London and was evacuated at the age of four to Wiltshire, (Trowbridge). The problem was adapting when I came home at the age of ten. My evacuee family were strict chapel; chapel twice a day on Sunday, prayer meetings on a Tuesday and each night a bible reading. When I finally went home to my real parents I couldn鈥檛 believe that I belonged to them because they had two rooms in a basement and my father was an alcoholic. The culture change was drastic and there was no counselling in those days.鈥
